Recommended. A silicone layer around the master, held by a printed shell whose flanges lock and clip together. For murtis, figures and reliefs.

For hollow FRP murtis. The silicone is poured in two halves with keys, so each half opens flat on its shell for gelcoat and glass, then the halves are joined.

Hard printed pieces bolted together. Pour wax, soap, plaster or resin straight in — only for shapes without undercuts.

All sizes in mm. Hugging uses less silicone; a box is simpler. 8–12 mm of silicone resists tearing. Pegs on the seam flange and a ridge on the base plate stop the pieces sliding; clips or bolts hold them shut.

How to use the mould

Print the base plate and shell. PLA is fine: 0.2 mm layers, 3–4 walls, 15–20% infill. Shell halves lie on their flat seam face.
If the master is separate, push it on the plate pin, or hot-glue your object inside the engraved outline. Seal a porous master and brush release agent on it and inside the shell.
Set the shell on the plate so the ridge drops into the groove. Close the halves on their pegs, clip all round the flanges with binder or alligator clips (or bolt them), and seal the outside of the seams with hot glue or clay.
Weigh and mix the silicone, degas if you can, and pour slowly in a thin stream through the spout until it rises in every vent.
After it cures, unclip, lift the shell off and remove the plate. On a 2-piece mould, cut the silicone along the seam line with a scalpel, in a zig-zag so it relocates, and take out the master.
Put the silicone back in the shell, clip it shut, and turn it over so the opening faces up. Pour your casting material into the opening.

Platinum silicone will not cure on sulfur clay, latex gloves or uncured resin prints — fully post-cure and clear-coat resin prints, or use tin-cure silicone.
